Day 21: An Independence Day Victory

The day began with coffee and ended with a celebration at the Monumento Nacional de la Bandera after Argentina’s penalty-shootout win over the Netherlands in the semifinals of the 2014 World Cup. In between, I finished homework and played two hours of pick-up soccer in the park. What a blessed day…

I won’t write too much about the game itself here, because you can just click here to read more at Sports Unbiased. All I can say is that, while I have been among larger crowds at places like Autzen Stadium on gamedays, there is nothing quite as powerful as standing among 50,000 fans singing together as one deep into the night as fireworks rage overhead and victory has already been secured.

What a dream… all I can hope now is that they finish the fairy tale for this trip and beat Germany on Sunday in a rematch of the 1986 and 1990 World Cup finals. I’d sure love another celebration like this (courtesy to Quinn Souther for the video):
